What's the show about?

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is directed by Oscar-winning film and theatre director Sam Mendes and adapted by the equally celebrated playwright David Grieg. The show also features a brand-new musical score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Whittman, the duo behind Hairspray and the American television show about the creation of a musical, SMASH! Choreographer Peter Darling is no stranger to the world of Roald Dahl, being the mastermind behind the Royal Shakespeare Company’s mega-hit Matilda the Musical. The technically inventive production includes an army of squirrels, a chocolate river and a flying glass elevator that little Charlie Bucket is witness to in his strange and magical journey through Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

What's the story?

The fairytale with a twist, we follow the story of Charlie Bucket, who lives in a run-down house with his mum, dad and numerous grandparents, including the sprightly Grandpa Joe. Charlie dreams of a better future, preferably one filled with sweets and chocolate, but can only afford one Wonka chocolate bar every year on his birthday. This year, however, the reclusive chocolate factory-owner Willy Wonka decides to hold a competition to allow a few lucky children to enter the peculiar world of his factory. He hides five golden tickets inside the wrappers of his chocolate bars and the finders of these tickets will be allowed inside the gates of the magical world of Willy Wonka. As chance would have it, Charlie finds a golden ticket and enters the bizarre factory with his Grandpa Joe, along with an array of horrible children that all end up in terrible accidents that just might have been their fault… or maybe helped along a bit by the destructively maniacal Oompa-Loompas.

Who is it for? Should I see it?

A sure-fire hit to please the whole family, tickets to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory can make the perfect trip to London with the family just that bit more special, with cartoonish characters and huge spectacular sets that will amaze anyone of any age. Although a children’s story, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has some darker undertones that may be missed by the kids but enjoyed for the adults! Please note that children under five years old will not be admitted.
