What's the show about?

Based on the acclaimed novel by the Children’s Laureate (03-05) Michael Morpurgo, War Horse has become synonymous with theatrical excellence. A hugely talented cast of actors works hand in hand with skilled puppeteers to bring the emotional tale of a young boy and his search for his beloved horse Joey to life on stage. The life-sized puppets by the internationally renowned Handspring Puppet Company need to be seen to be believed. This impacting story has received unanimous praise from audience and critic alike and, five years on, it is still the must-see show in theatreland.

What's the story?

Set amongst the grim reality of World War One, young Albert Narracott befriends a foal he names Joey. Caring for and training his horse, Albert and Joey become inseparable, but as war is declared, Albert’s father does the unthinkable and sells Joey to the British Army, whereafter he is sent over to France to fight on the front line. Distraught, Albert enlists in the infantry years too young and goes over to France on a treacherous journey to search for his only friend. In the face of horror and needless bloodshed, can the two friends find each other before it’s too late?

A story of friendship and love against all odds, War Horse is utterly captivating and intensely moving.

Who is it for? Should I see it?

War Horse is not for the faint-hearted. As you can imagine, due to the setting of World War One, there is much death and some very dark moments in the play. It is advised that children under ten do not attend. However, the skillful use of puppetry and imaginative theatrical techniques makes War Horse a must for anyone interested in or studying theatre. If they can handle the emotional rollercoaster, animal-lovers will be enthralled by this show as well.
