What's the show about?

Based on the 2000 BAFTA and Oscar-nominated film staring Jamie Bell and Julie Walters that broke box office records worldwide, Billy Elliot The Musical was created by writer Lee Hall with director Stephen Daldry and choreographer extraordinaire Peter Darling. The music and lyrics are written by the much-celebrated singer- songwriter Elton John, who released the song ‘Electricity’ from the show into the charts to promote the musical.

The musical opened in London’s West End back in 2005 and was nominated for nine Olivier Awards, winning four including Best New Musical. Billy Elliot the Musical is now a worldwide smash hit, with productions in Australia and on Broadway. Across the pond, it won ten Drama Desk Awards and ten Tony Awards!

What's the story?

It is based on Lee Hall’s original screenplay that was inspired by the UK miners’ strike in 1984 that took place in the north-east of England. The story follows a young boy named Billy who dreams of one day becoming a ballet dancer, but must keep his aspiration a secret from his dad and brother, both striking miners. As the miners’ strike becomes more and more violent, Billy escapes the harsh realities of working-class life in County Durham by learning ballet. Billy’s ballet teacher thinks he has what it takes to go all the way to the Royal Ballet School and train to become a world-class dancer, but if he wants to realise this dream, he must first come clean to his family...

Who is it for? Should I see it?

Fans of the film will fall head over heels in love with this musical, as it takes all the best moments from the film and adds so much more into the mix. The production is also surprisingly political, showing support for the miners against Thatcher’s brutal zero-tolerance policing procedures. Anyone who has an affinity for dance will also love the balletic and jazz dance elements.

Billy Elliot is not suitable for children under the age of 12, as there is a lot of strong language and several violent scenes.
